Sisal Flooring Solutions
At The Ilkley Flooring Company, we specialise in high-quality sisal flooring, offering a stylish, practical and affordable alternative to traditional wool carpets.
Sisal has grown in popularity over the last three decades and is now a firm favourite among interior designers. Frequently featured in interior design magazines, it is regarded as a highly fashionable and contemporary floor covering. Made from sustainable natural fibres and being 100% biodegradable, sisal is also an excellent choice for environmentally conscious homeowners looking to create a stylish yet responsible living space.
Versatile in design, colour and texture, sisal flooring is suitable for virtually any area of the home. Shorter loop constructions create a tougher, slightly textured feel, making them ideal for high-traffic areas such as hallways and staircases. Larger weaves offer a softer feel underfoot, perfect for bedrooms and living spaces where comfort is key.

Sisal Flooring – Buyer's Guide
Sisal is durable, stylish and environmentally friendly. Made from natural fibres, it is 100% biodegradable and highly hard-wearing, making it ideal for busy homes while offering a modern, textured finish.
Yes, sisal is extremely tough and performs well in high-traffic areas such as hallways and stairs. Tighter weave options provide extra durability where it’s needed most.
Sisal is relatively low maintenance. Regular vacuuming helps maintain its appearance. However, as a natural fibre, it should be kept dry and cleaned carefully to avoid water damage.
Absolutely. Sisal is a popular choice for bespoke hall and stair runners due to its strength, texture and stylish appearance. It creates a striking, durable finish that enhances both traditional and contemporary homes.
Sisal is one of the toughest natural floorcoverings available. Properly fitted and maintained, sisal flooring typically lasts 10 to 15 years in a busy family home, making it a genuinely long-term investment. Unlike many synthetic carpets, it does not crush or flatten over time, so it holds its texture and appearance well even in high-traffic areas like hallways and stairs.
Sisal handles dry dirt brilliantly. Dust, mud and everyday debris vacuum up easily. However, it is highly absorbent, so liquid spills are its weak point. Red wine, coffee and pet accidents can cause permanent staining if not dealt with immediately.
Cleaning tips:
- Regular vacuuming with a strong suction cleaner is all it needs day to day.
- Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry white cloth and never rub or soak the fibres.
- Traditional carpet shampooing and steam cleaning are not suitable for sisal. Specialist dry cleaning methods are far safer.
- A stain protection treatment applied at fitting can make a real difference.
If you need a truly wipeable floor in a busy kitchen or family room, for example, it is worth discussing your options with us in our Ilkley showroom.
As a natural fibre, sisal absorbs moisture, which means it is not well suited to consistently damp environments. Bathrooms, wet rooms and poorly ventilated spaces are best avoided. Some customers do choose sisal in larger, open plan kitchens, but you will need to be realistic about occasional splashes and spills.
Prolonged exposure to moisture can cause staining, swelling, movement and in the worst cases, mould. For rooms where dampness is a regular factor, we would recommend exploring alternative natural flooring options, something we are happy to talk through with you.
Sisal has a distinctive, firm, textured feel that is quite different from a soft wool carpet or deep pile. In tighter weaves it can feel a little scratchy underfoot, particularly in bare feet.
- Bedrooms and snug areas: a chunkier, softer weave works better and feels warmer.
- Hallways and stairs: the texture is generally very comfortable and gives a satisfying grip underfoot.
- Young children: sisal is perfectly fine for everyday use, though a wool rug or layer on top can be cosier for crawling and play.
We always recommend visiting our Ilkley showroom to walk on fitted samples in both bare feet and socks. It is the only way to know whether the texture is right for you.
Sisal is extremely popular for staircases and landings, and for good reason. It lies flat, wears well on the nosing of each tread, and provides firm, reliable grip underfoot. It works beautifully as a full stair carpet or as a stair runner with a contrasting bound edge.
The key to a safe staircase is quality fitting. Each tread and riser needs to be tight and even, with no loose edges or ridges. This is an area where using an experienced natural flooring fitter makes all the difference.
Sisal behaves very differently from a standard synthetic carpet. Because it is a natural fibre, it expands and contracts slightly with changes in humidity, so the fitting system needs to accommodate this and keep it stable over time.
- A firm, dense underlay is typically recommended, although sisal can also be direct stuck to the subfloor for a firmer feel.
- Most wall to wall sisal is fully glued down, either to the subfloor or to the underlay, rather than simply stretched on gripper rods as with standard carpet.
- Sisal should be delivered and left in the room for at least 24 to 48 hours before fitting, to adjust to the temperature and humidity of your home.
Getting these details right is what separates a great looking floor that stays put from one that ripples or moves over time.
It can, but only if it is incorrectly fitted or if the room conditions are particularly changeable. High humidity causes sisal to expand slightly, while dry conditions cause it to contract. In a loosely fitted floor, this shows up as ripples, bubbles or small gaps at the skirting boards.
The solution is straightforward: correct acclimatisation before fitting, the right adhesive and fitting system, and reasonably stable room conditions. Fitted properly by an experienced fitter, sisal should lie flat and stay that way for years.
Sisal is ideally suited to stairs, landings and hallways, where its durability and grip really shine. It also works beautifully in living rooms and home offices for a smart, natural look that stands up to everyday life, and in bedrooms, particularly in softer, chunkier weaves. Bespoke rugs and bound runners are a great way to enjoy the look without committing to wall to wall flooring.
Areas to approach with caution or avoid altogether include bathrooms, shower rooms and toilets, damp basements or poorly ventilated spaces, directly in front of external doors where wet footwear is walked straight in, and very busy family kitchens unless you are prepared for the occasional mark over time.
Sisal is an excellent choice if sustainability matters to you. It is made from the leaves of the agave plant, a fast growing, renewable resource, and is naturally biodegradable and low in VOCs compared with many synthetic carpets. It is also naturally antistatic, meaning it does not attract dust in the way some man-made fibres do.
If eco credentials are a priority, it is worth asking about the type of backing used, such as natural latex versus synthetic, and any adhesives or stain treatments applied during fitting. We are happy to talk you through the options at our Ilkley showroom.
Yes, and it is genuinely worth it. A fitter experienced with natural fibre flooring will understand acclimatisation, the direction of the weave, where joins will be visible, and which underlays and adhesives are right for your subfloor. They will also ensure that edges, stair details and tricky shapes look clean and professional.
Specialist fitting may cost a little more than a standard carpet installation, but it protects your investment, reduces the risk of problems like rippling or fraying, and ensures the finished result looks exactly as it should.
For stair runners, complex hallways and open plan spaces in particular, an experienced natural flooring fitter is essential, and something we arrange as standard here at our Ilkley flooring showroom.
