Vinyl Flooring – Buyer's Guide

Everything you need to know before choosing sheet or cushion vinyl flooring for your home

Yes. Vinyl is water-resistant and highly durable, making it an excellent choice for kitchens, bathrooms and other moisture-prone areas.

With proper installation and maintenance, quality vinyl flooring can last many years, even in high-traffic areas.

Very much so. Regular sweeping and occasional mopping are usually enough to keep vinyl floors looking clean and fresh.

Yes. Modern manufacturing techniques allow vinyl to replicate the appearance and texture of natural materials such as wood, slate and stone with impressive realism.

Sheet vinyl is a roll product: a flexible sheet with a printed design layer and a protective wear layer on top. It typically comes in 2m, 3m and 4m widths and is one of the most versatile and practical flooring options available.
It is ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, cloakrooms, hallways and playrooms, and works well in most domestic rooms as long as the subfloor is suitable and properly prepared. If you are looking for a hard-wearing, easy to clean floor that can handle everyday family life, sheet vinyl is well worth considering.

The surface of sheet vinyl is highly water resistant and is often described as waterproof, making it a popular choice for bathrooms and kitchens. Because there are no grout lines and very few seams, there are far fewer places for water to get in. It handles everyday spills, splashes and muddy boots very well, provided they are wiped up promptly.
That said, it is still important to have a dry, sound subfloor underneath. Trapped moisture beneath the vinyl can cause problems over time, which is why proper subfloor preparation before fitting is so important.

Modern cushion vinyl is considerably tougher than old-fashioned lino-style floors, though it is still a softer product than tiles or rigid boards. Durability largely comes down to two things: the thickness of the wear layer and the type of backing used. Thicker wear layers resist scuffs and everyday wear far better, while felt-backed, foam-backed and compact-backed products each have slightly different characteristics in terms of feel and resilience.
In a normal home, a decent quality vinyl correctly fitted can last many years, particularly in kitchens, bathrooms and hallways. Very sharp objects and heavy point loads such as unprotected appliance feet can mark or dent it, so it is worth using felt pads under furniture legs and taking reasonable care.

The differences become clear fairly quickly in everyday use. Better quality ranges are typically thicker or have denser backings, so they feel more solid and comfortable underfoot. The wear layer is thicker, which means better resistance to scratching and scuffing over time. The design quality is also noticeably higher, with more realistic wood, stone and tile prints and embossed surface textures that add to the authentic look.
Cheaper vinyl can be a perfectly good short-term or budget solution, but for busy family spaces, mid to higher quality products tend to be more cost effective in the long run. We are happy to talk you through the ranges we stock in our Ilkley showroom and help you find the right balance of quality and budget for your room.

In most cases, no separate underlay is needed under sheet vinyl in the way it is with carpet. Instead, the subfloor is smoothed and prepared first, whether that means laying plywood over floorboards or applying a smoothing compound over concrete, and the vinyl is then laid directly onto this prepared surface.
In some installations a specific cushion underlay or backing system may be used, but this is part of the fitting method rather than a thick, separate underlay in the traditional sense. Getting the subfloor preparation right is far more important than adding an underlay.

Often yes, but the existing floor must be flat, firm and dry. Over old vinyl, it is usually possible to lay new sheet vinyl on top provided the existing floor is firmly stuck, smooth and not cushioned or soft. Over tiles, the floor is typically over-boarded with plywood or smoothed with compound first so that the grout lines do not telegraph through to the surface. Over floorboards, a layer of suitable plywood is generally laid first to provide a smooth, even base.
Any imperfections in the subfloor can show through the vinyl over time, which is why proper preparation is so critical to a good long-term result.

Vinyl is very easy to live with day to day. Regular sweeping or vacuuming to remove dust and grit, followed by a damp mop with a mild vinyl-safe cleaner, is all it needs. Avoid abrasive pads, harsh chemicals and solvent-based cleaners, as these can damage the surface over time. Very hot steam mops should also be avoided unless the manufacturer specifically approves them for the product you have chosen.
Using entrance mats to catch grit and moisture at doorways, and felt pads under heavy furniture, will help keep the floor looking its best for longer.

Modern sheet vinyl is designed for indoor use and most quality products are low in VOCs. Many ranges are manufactured to meet strict emissions standards for indoor air quality, and some are advertised as phthalate free or carry specific eco and health credentials. If this matters to you, it is worth asking about certifications when you are choosing your product.
If you have particular sensitivities or concerns, we would recommend choosing a reputable brand and asking us for the relevant documentation at our Ilkley showroom. We are happy to help you find a product that meets your requirements.

Sheet vinyl compares very favourably with harder floors in this respect. It is quieter than tiles or laminate because it has a slight give that helps absorb sound. It is also warmer underfoot than ceramics and similar hard surfaces, particularly on upper floors. Foam-backed cushion vinyl in particular has a softness underfoot that many people find very comfortable for rooms where you spend a lot of time standing, such as kitchens.
It also works very well with underfloor heating when installed according to the manufacturer's guidelines, making it a practical and comfortable choice all year round.

Small, straightforward rooms can be a DIY project, but many customers prefer to have vinyl fitted professionally and for good reason. Large sheets are heavy and awkward to manoeuvre, particularly in bathrooms and kitchens with pipework, units and lots of cut-outs. Getting the subfloor smooth and level is also critical to achieving a good finish and a long-lasting result.
Neat joins, tidy thresholds and well-applied silicone sealing around baths and showers not only look better but also help keep water from getting underneath. A professional fitter will measure accurately, prepare the subfloor correctly, cut and fit neatly, and advise on the best product for your specific room. It is a service we arrange as standard here at our Ilkley flooring showroom.
